Kathryn Hunter is a British-American actress and theatre director renowned for her transformative performances and versatility across stage and screen. Born Aikaterini Hadjipateras on April 9, 1957, in New York City to Greek parents, she was raised in England and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where she is now an associate and regularly directs student productions. Hunter's stage career is distinguished by her physical theatre work and her ability to portray a wide range of characters, including male roles. She made history as the first British woman to professionally play King Lear, a role she performed at the Young Vic in 1997 . Her other notable stage credits include playing Puck in Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the title role in Kafka’s Monkey, and the Fool in King Lear . Hunter's work with Théâtre de Complicité, including The Visit, earned her an Olivier Award for Best Actress in 1991. In film and television, Hunter is recognized for her roles in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as Arabella Figg, The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) as the Three Witches, and Andor (2022–2025) as Eedy Karn . Her portrayal of the Three Witches in The Tragedy of Macbeth was particularly acclaimed, earning her the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress .
