He grew up in Riverside and Victorville, California, in a "fractured family that was dysfunctional on both sides," which he has spoken about influencing his decision to pursue acting. He joined his high school's drama club at 14 and later attended the John Casablancas Modeling & Career Center in Orange County.Stanfield's breakthrough came with his feature film debut in Destin Daniel Cretton's independent drama "Short Term 12" (2013), a role for which he earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination. He quickly gained further recognition for his roles in critically acclaimed films such as "Selma" (2014), where he played Jimmie Lee Jackson, and "Straight Outta Compton" (2015), portraying Snoop Dogg.
