Leslie Odom Jr. is an American actor, singer, and songwriter renowned for his multifaceted career spanning Broadway, television, film, and music. Born on August 6, 1981, in Queens, New York City, he earned a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and began his professional career on Broadway in 1998. Odom gained widespread recognition for originating the role of Aaron Burr in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, earning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2016. Beyond Hamilton, Odom's acting credits include the television series Smash (2012–2013) and Person of Interest (2013–2014), as well as films such as Red Tails (2012), Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Harriet (2019), and The Many Saints of Newark (2021). He also portrayed singer Sam Cooke in the film One Night in Miami (2020), earning nominations for the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. In music, Odom has released five albums: Leslie Odom Jr. (2014), Simply Christmas (2016), Mr. (2019), The Christmas Album (2020), and When a Crooner Dies (2023). His holiday album Simply Christmas topped the iTunes and Billboard Jazz charts and reached No. 31 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Odom is also an author; his memoir Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim Higher, and Never Stop Learning was published in 2018, and his children's book I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know, co-written with his wife Nicolette Robinson, debuted on the New York Times bestseller list in 2023. In September 2025, Odom will return to Broadway to reprise his Tony-winning role as Aaron Burr in Hamilton for a special 12-week engagement at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Odom is married to actress Nicolette Robinson, and they have two children.
