She developed an interest in acting early on, participating in plays during elementary school and attending summer drama camp at Idyllwild Arts Academy, where she later transferred for her final two years of high school. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Hartt School, the performing-arts conservatory at the University of Hartford, in 2000. After graduating, Ireland moved to New York City and became active in the off-Broadway theater scene.Known for her significant work in theater and independent films, The New York Times has referred to her as "one of the great drama queens of the New York stage." Her theatrical credits include "Reasons to Be Pretty," for which she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play and won a Theatre World Award.
