The Boogeyman 2023

The 2023 supernatural horror film, The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage and loosely based on the Stephen King short story, centers on the Harper family, who are struggling to cope with the sudden death of the family matriarch, Cara. The father, Will Harper (Chris Messina), a therapist, is emotionally unavailable, leaving his teenage daughter, Sadie Harper (Sophie Thatcher), and younger daughter, Sawyer Harper (Vivien Lyra Blair), to navigate their grief largely alone. The terrifying ordeal begins when a disturbed patient, Lester Billings (David Dastmalchian), shows up at Will's home office unannounced. Lester, whose own children died under mysterious circumstances, claims a creature known as "The Boogeyman"—which feeds on fear and grief—killed them. Lester later commits suicide in Sadie's deceased mother's art closet. Soon after, the creature latches onto the Harpers, attacking young Sawyer, who is already terrified of the dark. Sadie begins to investigate Lester's story and connects with his estranged, unhinged wife, Rita Billings (Marin Ireland), who reveals the Boogeyman's weakness is light. The entity, which thrives in darkness and can mimic voices, isolates the family and eventually takes Will to the basement. The sisters manage to rescue their father, and in a final confrontation, Sadie uses fire to burn the creature, seemingly vanquishing it and setting their house ablaze. In the final scene, the family is in therapy with Dr. Weller (LisaGay Hamilton), and a post-session moment suggests the creature may still be lurking, feeding on Sadie's lingering trauma, though she chooses to close the closet door on the suspicion. The film was released theatrically by 20th Century Studios on June 2, 2023, after originally being slated for a streaming-only release on Hulu. It performed well at the box office, grossing a worldwide total of approximately $82.3 million against a reported production budget of $35 million. For those looking to watch at home, The Boogeyman has been released for streaming on Hulu in the United States, with its streaming debut occurring on October 5, 2023. Other regions may find it available for rent or purchase on various digital platforms, with availability varying by country.
