Prey for the Devil 2022
Prey for the Devil 2022 centers on Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers), a young nun working as a nurse at the St. Michael the Archangel School of Exorcism in Boston, a facility recently reopened by the Catholic Church in response to a global rise in demonic possessions. Though women are forbidden from performing exorcisms, Ann is determined to study the practice, driven by the belief that her mentally ill mother, who died by suicide, was actually possessed by a demon that targeted Ann. A professor, Father Quinn (Colin Salmon), recognizes her unique gifts and permits her to audit classes alongside student priests like Father Dante (Christian Navarro). Ann develops a special bond with a possessed young girl named Natalie (Posy Taylor), whom she suspects is afflicted by the same demon that tormented her mother. As Ann delves deeper, she discovers a shocking truth: Natalie is the daughter Ann gave up for adoption as a pregnant teenager. The demon exploits this trauma and the anguish of abandonment. In the climax, Ann confronts the demon, which leaves Natalie to possess her instead. Drawing on the sacrificial love of her mother (who killed herself to protect Ann from the demon's influence), Ann regains control and purifies herself in a pool of holy water, seemingly expelling the demon. She is rewarded with an academic research fellowship at the Vatican to study demonology, with the potential to become the first female exorcist in centuries, though the final scene suggests the demonic threat is far from over. The main cast of Prey for the Devil includes Jacqueline Byers as the protagonist, Sister Ann; Colin Salmon as Father Quinn, her mentor; Christian Navarro as Father Dante, a fellow student; Posy Taylor as the possessed child Natalie; Ben Cross as Cardinal Matthews (in his final film role); and Virginia Madsen as Dr. Peters. The film received largely negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a low approval rating, with the critical consensus describing it as a "potboiler" that is "just another regurgitation of yesterday's devout scare tactics." Critics frequently noted that the film adheres too closely to the formula established by The Exorcist without offering anything new or genuinely frightening, though some reviewers found it to be a "decently entertaining possession potboiler." Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C+." Prey for the Devil performed moderately at the box office against its budget. It was released in the United States and Canada on October 28, 2022. The film grossed $19.8 million domestically and $24.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of approximately $44.7 million.
