Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an American actress and singer, born on November 28, 1984, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and raised in Sandy, Utah, as the youngest of five children. Initially training for a career as a ballerina, she turned to acting as a teenager and landed her first major role as Jessica Bennett on the soap opera Passions (1999–2000). She gained wider attention for her work in the horror genre, earning a "scream queen" reputation through films like Final Destination 3 (2006) and Black Christmas (2006), and also appeared in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (2007). Winstead transitioned to action and comedy roles, notably as Lucy Gennero-McClane in Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). Her critically acclaimed performance as an alcoholic in the independent drama Smashed (2012) was followed by roles in other indie films and blockbusters like 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and her television work includes the lead role of Nikki Swango in the third season of the crime drama Fargo (2017) and Hera Syndulla in the Star Wars series Ahsoka (2023). She is also one half of the musical duo Got a Girl with Dan the Automator.
