The Hand That Rocks the Cradle 2025

The 2025 film, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, is a modern psychological thriller remake of the 1992 cult classic, released directly to streaming on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally on October 22, 2025. Directed by Michelle Garza Cervera and written by Micah Bloomberg, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Caitlyn Morales, a wealthy, suburban mother, and Maika Monroe as Polly Murphy, the mysterious nanny she hires. The plot centers on Caitlyn, a high-functioning lawyer with a history of past trauma, who hires Polly to help care for her newborn and older daughter, Emma, after their paths briefly cross. Polly, however, has a sinister, calculated agenda for revenge linked to a traumatic event from Caitlyn's childhood where Caitlyn, whose real name was Jennifer, was involved in a fire that killed Polly’s family. Polly manipulates the family from within, intentionally worsening Caitlyn's fragile mental state by replacing her medication, causing her husband, Miguel (Raúl Castillo), and others to believe Caitlyn is simply paranoid or suffering from postpartum issues, while she slowly tries to integrate herself into the family to take Caitlyn's place. The film is noted for updating the original's themes with a focus on modern anxieties, class differences, and a subtle exploration of LGBTQ+ subtext between the two female leads, though critics' reception has been mixed, praising the lead performances but debating whether the film successfully elevates the source material.
