Maximilian Carlo "Max" Martini (born December 11, 1969) is an American actor, writer, and director, known for his intense and often military-themed roles in film and television. Born in Woodstock, New York, Martini has Italian roots through his father and spent parts of his childhood living abroad in Italy and Canada. His family was involved in the arts, fostering his early interest. Before pursuing acting, he initially considered a career in professional football but shifted his focus after an injury. He later studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse and Michael Howard Studios and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpture from the School of Visual Arts in New York.Martini's career began in the mid-1990s with small television parts and supporting roles in major films like Robert Zemeckis's "Contact" (1997) and Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), where he played Corporal Fred Henderson. He gained significant recognition for his role as Master Sergeant Mack Gerhardt in David Mamet's critically acclaimed CBS military drama series "The Unit" (2006–2009), which ran for four seasons. His work in military-themed productions continued with "The Great Raid" (2005), and he notably portrayed Navy SEAL Commander in "Captain Phillips" (2013) and Mark "Oz" Geist in Michael Bay's "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" (2016).Beyond military roles, Martini has showcased his versatility in various films, including "Pacific Rim" (2013) as Herc Hansen, and as Christian Grey's bodyguard, Jason Taylor, in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy.
