Mel Gibson

Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson is an American actor, director, and producer who rose to international fame during the Australian New Wave cinema movement. Born in Peekskill, New York, in 1956, he moved to Sydney, Australia, at age 12, where he later studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art. He first achieved prominence with his breakthrough role as Max Rockatansky in the dystopian action film Mad Max (1979) and its sequels, followed by critically acclaimed performances in films like Peter Weir's Gallipoli (1981) and The Year of Living Dangerously (1982). Gibson cemented his Hollywood action star status as Martin Riggs in the successful Lethal Weapon buddy cop series, beginning in 1987. Transitioning to filmmaking, his directorial effort Braveheart (1995), in which he also starred as William Wallace, earned him Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. He continued his work as a director and producer with the highly controversial but financially successful biblical drama The Passion of the Christ (2004) and the action-adventure film Apocalypto (2006). After a period of public and legal troubles, his directorial career saw a resurgence with the war film Hacksaw Ridge (2016), which received multiple Academy Award nominations. He is also known for Boneyard (2024).
