Michael Madsen

Michael Søren Madsen was an American actor, widely known for his distinct and frequently volatile performances, particularly in films directed by Quentin Tarantino. Born on September 25, 1957, in Chicago, he was the son of a filmmaker/author mother, Elaine Madsen, and a firefighter father, Calvin Christian Madsen, and is the brother of actress Virginia Madsen. Madsen’s career spanned over four decades and included notable roles in mainstream Hollywood cinema, such as the love interest Jimmy Lennox in Thelma & Louise (1991), and Glen Greenwood in the family film Free Willy (1993). However, he is perhaps most recognized for his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino, beginning with the sadistic Vic Vega, a.k.a. Mr. Blonde, in Tarantino's feature directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs (1992). He reunited with Tarantino to play Budd (code name "Sidewinder")—the slacker, trailer-dwelling brother of Bill and former member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad—in Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004). He went on to appear in Tarantino's The Hateful Eight (2015) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Beyond acting, Madsen was also a published poet and photographer. He passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 67, due to cardiac arrest caused by heart failure.
