Michael McElhatton is an accomplished Irish actor and writer born on September 12, 1963, in Dublin, Ireland. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and has built a diverse career spanning theatre, film, and television since the 1980s. While he has been a familiar face in Irish film and television, often serving as both an actor and screenwriter for projects like the popular Irish sitcom Paths to Freedom (2000) and its subsequent film adaptation Spin the Bottle (2003), he gained significant international fame for his role as the calculating and ruthless warlord Roose Bolton in the HBO series Game of Thrones, which he played from Season 2 to Season 6 (2012–2016). Following his success on the fantasy epic, McElhatton has appeared in a number of high-profile projects, including the acclaimed miniseries Chernobyl (2019), the film The Zookeeper's Wife (2017), Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017), the Ridley Scott film The Last Duel (2021), and as Tam al'Thor in Amazon's The Wheel of Time series (2021). His notable film roles also include his work in Albert Nobbs (2011) and the horror film The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016), where he played Sheriff Sheldon.
