Mukesh Chhabra is one of the most prominent and influential casting directors in the Hindi film industry, a filmmaker, and an occasional actor. Born on May 27, 1980, in Delhi, he began his career after receiving his acting diploma from the Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts and spending six years with the National School of Drama's Theatre in Education (TIE) Company. He started in the film industry as an assistant casting director with Rang De Basanti (2006) and established the Mukesh Chhabra Casting Company (MCCC) in 2008, which has since cast over 300 movies and 100 web series. Chhabra is widely credited with revolutionizing the casting process and discovering/launching the careers of many talented actors, including Rajkummar Rao, Sushant Singh Rajput, Sanya Malhotra, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. His breakthrough came with films like Rockstar (2011) and the iconic ensemble casting for Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), which cemented his reputation for finding authentic and complex talent. His extensive filmography as a casting director includes major projects like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Dangal, Scam 1992, Laal Singh Chaddha, Jawan, and Dunki, for which he has received numerous awards and recognition, including the Stardust Award for Special Recognition to a Casting Director. In 2020, Mukesh Chhabra made his directorial debut with the critically and emotionally significant romantic drama, Dil Bechara, starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi. He is also a multifaceted artist, having acted in films like Jawan (2023), and he actively conducts acting workshops and theatre festivals.
