Nicola Coughlan is an acclaimed Irish actress who achieved global recognition for her starring roles in two major television hits: the Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls and the Netflix period drama Bridgerton. Born in Galway in 1987, she trained at the Oxford School of Drama and the Birmingham School of Acting, though her early career saw her struggling with financial difficulties and working part-time jobs before landing her breakout roles. From 2018 to 2022, she charmed audiences as the high-strung, perpetually worried Clare Devlin in Derry Girls, a comedy set against the backdrop of The Troubles in 1990s Northern Ireland. Following this, she earned international stardom as Penelope Featherington in Shonda Rhimes' Bridgerton (2020–present), a character who begins as a quiet wallflower but is secretly revealed to be the anonymous, sharp-witted gossip columnist Lady Whistledown. The third season of Bridgerton centered on her character's love story with Colin Bridgerton, cementing her status as a leading actress and earning her critical praise.
