Born John Peter Sarsgaard on March 7, 1971, in St. Clair County, Illinois, he was raised in a Catholic family and moved frequently due to his father's career in the U.S. Air Force. Sarsgaard attended Bard College and later Washington University in St. Louis, where he co-founded an improv troupe and honed his acting skills. He began his professional career in the mid-1990s, making his film debut in Dead Man Walking (1995). His breakthrough came with Boys Don’t Cry (1999), where he portrayed a sympathetic character in a harrowing story. Sarsgaard's filmography includes notable performances in The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), Shattered Glass (2003), Jarhead (2005), Blue Jasmine (2013), and The Lost Daughter (2021).
