Resul Pookutty
Resul Pookutty is an internationally acclaimed Indian film sound designer, sound editor, and audio mixer who is widely recognized for revolutionizing the quality of sound in Indian cinema. Born on May 30, 1971, in Vilakkupara, Kerala, he overcame a humble background—having studied under the light of a kerosene lamp—to pursue his passion, eventually graduating from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, in 1995. He made his debut in 1997 and gained early recognition for his work on films like Black (2005), Musafir (2004), and Saawariya (2007). His career reached global heights in 2009 when he won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing (shared with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke) for the British film Slumdog Millionaire, becoming one of the few Indians to win an Oscar. He also won a BAFTA Award for the same film. In his emotional acceptance speech, he dedicated the award to his country, mentioning the word "Om." His contribution to Indian cinema has been recognized with the civilian honor of Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2010, along with a National Film Award for Best Audiography for the Malayalam film Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2009). Pookutty is known for his versatile work across multiple languages, including Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil (e.g., Enthiran, 2.0), and English, and has also recently ventured into film direction with the Malayalam film Otta (2023).
