Ricard Cussó

Ricard Cussó is a Spanish-Australian feature film director primarily known for his work in CGI animated films, particularly within the burgeoning Australian animation industry. He has directed several features for Universal Pictures' Tales From Sanctuary City franchise, a trilogy that includes The Wishmas Tree (2019), Combat Wombat (2020), and Daisy Quokka: World's Scariest Animal (2021). Cussó often collaborates with co-director Tania Vincent, with whom he directed the animated feature Scarygirl (2023) and is working on forthcoming films like Combat Wombat: Back 2 Back and The Sloth Lane. His approach to animation is distinct, as he comes from a live-action background, having spent many years directing and designing live theatrical shows and attractions for major Hollywood films like Ghostbusters and The Terminator. This background informs his focus on cinematography and character direction (treating animators like actors), which is often cited as a strength in his work. Most recently, Cussó is the co-director, alongside Rio Harrington, for the highly anticipated animated adaptation of the children's book, The Pout-Pout Fish (2026).
