Scott Braden Cawthon, born on June 4, 1978, is an American video game developer, animator, writer, and film producer, best known as the creator of the massively popular Five Nights at Freddy's media franchise. Before his major success, Cawthon's career in game development had a more modest start, focusing on self-funded, family-friendly Christian video games and animations.A devout Christian, he attended the Art Institute of Houston and taught himself to use game engines like Clickteam Fusion. His early projects, though well-received by their niche audience, did not achieve commercial success. This led to a period of financial hardship and creative frustration. A turning point in his career came from the unexpected criticism of his game Chipper & Sons Lumber Co., where players noted the animatronic-like movements of the characters were "unintentionally terrifying." Instead of being discouraged, Cawthon took this feedback and decided to create something intentionally scary. This new direction resulted in the first Five Nights at Freddy's game, released in 2014. Its unique blend of jump scares, minimalist gameplay, and deep, mysterious lore quickly captivated players and gained a cult following. The game's success launched a sprawling franchise that includes multiple video games, a best-selling series of novels, and a successful film adaptation. While he has largely retired from active game development to focus on his family, Cawthon continues to be involved with the franchise, contributing to the storylines and serving as a producer on projects like the Five Nights at Freddy's film series.
