Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (2025)
Released in early December 2025, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 expands the cinematic universe of Scott Cawthon’s horror franchise, blending elements from the second game with original lore. Set roughly one year after the first film, the story follows Mike Schmidt as he struggles to maintain a normal life for his younger sister, Abby, while keeping the truth about her animatronic "friends" hidden. The plot is set into motion when Abby, feeling isolated and missing the spirits, sneaks out to the ruins of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Her return to the site triggers the awakening of the Marionette, a vengeful spirit possessed by Charlotte Emily, the daughter of Fazbear co-founder Henry. Through haunting flashbacks to 1982, the film reveals Charlotte's murder at the hands of William Afton and her motive: a deep-seated grudge against the adults who ignored her pleas for help. The stakes escalate during the town's inaugural "Fazfest," where the Marionette takes control of a new line of "Toy" animatronics to target the town's parents, leading to a high-tension climax at the original pizzeria where Mike must use a mysterious music box to save Abby from possession. The cast features returning stars Josh Hutcherson as Mike Schmidt, Piper Rubio as Abby, and Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa Shelly, who continues to grapple with the trauma of her father's crimes. Matthew Lillard returns as William Afton, appearing primarily in psychological nightmare sequences. New additions to the franchise include Skeet Ulrich as Henry (Charlotte's father), Wayne Knight as the antagonistic teacher Mr. Berg, and Mckenna Grace as Lisa, the leader of a group of paranormal investigators known as the "Spectral Scoopers." In a notable expansion of the animatronic cast, Megan Fox provides the voice and performance for Toy Chica, while veteran voice actor Kellen Goff lends his voice to several characters. The film’s production design by Marc Fisichella and animatronics by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop have been praised for bringing the sleek, "uncanny valley" look of the Toy animatronics to life. Commercially, the film has proven to be a massive financial success for Blumhouse and Universal, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics who found the lore-heavy plot occasionally confusing. Opening to a strong $63 million domestically, it broke records for the post-Thanksgiving weekend and surpassed its predecessor's theatrical-only performance. As of late December 2025, the film has grossed over $212 million worldwide against a production budget estimated between $36 million and $51 million. This robust performance was bolstered by a dedicated fan base and a strategic theatrical-exclusive window, a departure from the first film's simultaneous streaming release. In terms of streaming and home media, Universal opted for a theatrical-exclusive worldwide release starting December 5, 2025 (with early releases in markets like France and Indonesia). To capitalize on the holiday season, the film was made available for Digital Purchase and Rental on December 23, 2025. While it has not yet arrived on a subscription streaming service, it is expected to land on Peacock in early 2026 as part of Universal's standard pay-one window. Physical collectors can expect a 4K UHD and Blu-ray release on February 17, 2026, which is rumored to include deleted scenes and a featurette on the creation of the Marionette.
