Born on August 17, 1960, in Santa Monica, California, to actor and director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan, he was raised in a show-business family. He began his acting career in the late 1970s and early 1980s, first appearing as an extra in an episode of Little House on the Prairie directed by his father. His breakout role came in the 1982 comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High as the stoner-surfer Jeff Spicoli, a role that became a cultural phenomenon.After establishing himself as a young actor, Penn transitioned to more dramatic and intense roles, earning critical praise for his performances in films like Bad Boys (1983) and The Falcon and the Snowman (1985).
