One Battle After Another 2025
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and released in late 2025, One Battle After Another (often referred to during production as The Battle of Baktan Cross) is a sprawling, satirical action-thriller loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland. The film spans two timelines, beginning with a high-energy prologue set 16 years in the past. It follows the "French 75," a radical revolutionary group led by Bob “Ghetto Pat” Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his partner Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor), as they raid a detention center to free undocumented immigrants. During this era, Perfidia has a brief, politically charged entanglement with their nemesis, Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn). Years later, the story shifts to a sun-baked, paranoid present where Bob lives off-grid in Northern California, raising his spirited teenage daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). Their peace is shattered when Lockjaw, now a high-ranking official seeking entry into a secretive white supremacist cabal called the Christmas Adventurers Club, resurfaces to "clean up" his past—specifically the secret that he might be Willa’s biological father. The narrative spirals into a chaotic cross-state chase involving corrupt law enforcement, a karate-teaching mentor named Sergio (Benicio del Toro), and old revolutionary allies. After a climactic desert showdown and a high-speed pursuit that leaves Lockjaw dead (betrayed and gassed by his own club), Bob gives Willa a long-hidden letter from her mother. The film concludes with Willa embracing her parents' radical legacy and driving off to join a massive protest in Oakland, symbolizing a new generation taking up the fight. The film features an ensemble cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, a "washed-up" revolutionary characterized by his cannabis-induced paranoia and bathrobe-clad physical comedy. Sean Penn portrays the primary antagonist, Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw, a military "attack dog" whose obsession with the past leads to his downfall. Teyana Taylor plays Perfidia Beverly Hills, the fierce but disillusioned mother, while newcomer Chase Infiniti delivers a breakout performance as Willa Ferguson. The supporting cast includes Benicio del Toro as Sensei Sergio St. Carlos, a martial arts expert and underground ally; Regina Hall as Deandra (alias "Lady Champagne"); Alana Haim as "Mae West"; and Wood Harris as Laredo. Other notable appearances include Tony Goldwyn, John Hoogenakker, and Shayna McHayle (Junglepussy) as members of the various radical and reactionary factions. Upon its theatrical release on September 26, 2025, One Battle After Another earned approximately $204–$205 million worldwide, with roughly $71 million coming from the domestic North American market and $133 million from international territories. While these figures made it the highest-grossing film of Paul Thomas Anderson’s career—surpassing the record previously held by There Will Be Blood—the film’s massive production budget (estimated between $130 million and $175 million) meant it was technically considered a commercial disappointment by traditional Hollywood standards. However, its strong performance in IMAX and 70mm formats solidified its status as a major cinematic event of the year, driven largely by DiCaprio's star power and critical acclaim.Following its exclusive theatrical window, the film moved to digital platforms. It officially began streaming worldwide on Max (formerly HBO Max) on December 19, 2025, for subscribers in the United States and several international markets, including Australia. In regions where Max is not available, the film was released simultaneously via local premium video-on-demand (PVOD) services like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play. The streaming debut was timed to capitalize on the year-end awards season, as the film is currently a major contender for several Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
