Setareh Maleki

Setareh Maleki is an Iranian actress, born on October 12, 1992, in Tehran. She has gained international recognition for her powerful performance as Sana, the younger daughter, in Mohammad Rasoulof's critically acclaimed 2024 film "The Seed of the Sacred Fig." Her acting career spans over a decade, with notable roles in films like "Trapped" (2013) and "Cafe" (2023), as well as the TV mini-series "Happiness" (2021). "The Seed of the Sacred Fig," a political drama shot secretly in Iran, explores the tensions within a family amid nationwide protests, with Maleki's character, Sana, and her older sister Rezvan (played by Mahsa Rostami), representing a defiant younger generation. Due to the controversial nature of the film and her participation, including appearing without a headscarf on screen, Setareh Maleki, along with her co-stars Mahsa Rostami and Niousha Akhshi, was forced to flee Iran and is now living in exile in Berlin. Her role in the film has brought her significant attention, with the movie receiving the Special Jury Prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and earning widespread critical acclaim for its bold portrayal of resistance against oppression.
