Shea Whigham is an American actor renowned for his compelling portrayals of complex, often morally ambiguous characters across film and television. Born Franklin Shea Whigham Jr. on January 5, 1969, in Tallahassee, Florida, he was raised in Lake Mary, Florida. Whigham pursued his passion for acting at the State University of New York at Purchase, where he co-founded the Rorschach Group, a New York-based theater company, with his college roommate Kirk Acevedo . Whigham's breakout role came in 2000 when he starred opposite Colin Farrell in Joel Schumacher's Tigerland. He gained further recognition for his portrayal of Elias "Eli" Thompson, the sheriff of Atlantic County, in HBO's acclaimed series Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014) . His film credits include notable performances in Silver Linings Playbook (2012), American Hustle (2013), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Kong: Skull Island (2017), First Man (2018), Joker (2019), and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) .
