Sophie Thompson
Sophie Thompson (born January 20, 1962) is a highly celebrated British actress known for her extensive work across film, television, and the stage. Born in Hampstead, London, into a prominent acting family, she is the daughter of Eric Thompson and Phyllida Law, and the younger sister of actress Emma Thompson. After training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, she established herself as a formidable talent, particularly in theater, where she has received six Olivier Award nominations. She won the 1999 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as the Baker's Wife in Into the Woods. Her film career includes memorable roles in classics such as Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Persuasion (1995), Emma (1996), and Gosford Park (2001). She also gained a new generation of fans portraying Mafalda Hopkirk in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. On television, she is well-known for her award-winning turn as the villainous Stella Crawford in EastEnders and for winning Celebrity MasterChef in 2014. In the 2026 film Greenland: Migration, Thompson plays the role of Mackenzie Matthews, a character described as a "kindly friend" whom the Garrity family encounters during their desperate journey through London. Her performance provides a rare moment of respite and emotional grounding in the otherwise high-stakes survival thriller. Beyond her acting, Thompson is also a published author, having written the recipe book My Family Kitchen (2015) and the children’s book Zoo Boy (2016). She is also an active charity ambassador for organizations such as Dan’s Fund For Burns.
