Vera Farmiga
Vera Farmiga (born August 6, 1973, in Clifton, New Jersey) is a Ukrainian-American actress, director, and producer celebrated for her depth and versatility across stage and screen. Raised in a Ukrainian-speaking household, she didn’t learn English until age six and spent her youth engaged in folk dancing and music—a foundation that informed her emotive performances . After earning a BFA from Syracuse University in 1995, she made her professional debut on Broadway and soon transitioned to film, earning acclaim for portraying a drug-addicted mother in Down to the Bone (2004), a role that garnered her multiple critics’ awards. Farmiga’s career soared as she earned an Academy Award nomination for Up in the Air (2009), followed by standout performances in The Departed, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Source Code, and Safe House. Her portrayal of Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring franchise elevated her to horror icon status, and her Emmy-nominated role as Norma Bates in Bates Motel further solidified her critical standing. In 2011, Farmiga made her directorial debut with Higher Ground, a personal and spiritual drama she also starred in alongside her sister Taissa; the film premiered at Sundance, earning praise for its nuanced storytelling. Alongside her film and television work, Vera has recently launched a musical chapter as the frontwoman of the metal band The Yagas, releasing singles in late 2024 and early 2025 that reflect her cultural roots and concerns. She is married to musician/producer Renn Hawkey and they have two children. Splitting time between rural New York and her professional commitments, Farmiga also raises angora goats, spins wool, and practices jujitsu—an indication of her eclectic interests and multifaceted talents. A recipient of numerous awards and nominations—including Oscars, Emmys, and Gothams—Vera Farmiga remains one of Hollywood’s most compelling artists, equally at home in drama, horror, direction, and now music.
