Weruche Opia

Weruche Opia is a celebrated British-Nigerian actress and entrepreneur, born on April 11, 1987, in Lagos, Nigeria. The daughter of veteran broadcaster Ruth Benamaisia-Opia, she moved to Southeast London at age 13 and later earned a degree in Drama and Sociology from the University of the West of England. She first gained prominence in the UK for her sharp comedic timing as Cleopatra Ofoedo in the BBC series Bad Education and its 2015 film spin-off. However, she achieved massive international critical acclaim for her role as Terry Pratchard in Michaela Coel’s groundbreaking 2020 miniseries I May Destroy You. Her performance as the loyal, vivacious best friend earned her a Black Reel Award and a nomination for a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress. In addition to her acting career, she is the founder and CEO of the faith-based clothing line Jesus Junkie Clothing. Opia’s filmography reflects a versatile range across comedy, drama, and high-budget fantasy. In the 2022 Netflix film Slumberland, she played Agent Green, a high-ranking operative of the Bureau of Subconscious Activities who pursues the protagonists through the dream world. Her other notable television credits include lead and recurring roles in the sitcom Sliced, the ITV thriller Our House, the Apple TV+ series High Desert, and the 2024 Disney+ animated series Iwájú, where she provided the voice for Otin. In 2024, she also starred as Coretta Scott King in the National Geographic anthology series Genius: MLK/X and played Riz Samuel in the BBC drama The Jetty. As of 2025, she continues to be a prominent figure in global entertainment, recently appearing in the pilot for the ABC drama RJ Decker and preparing for upcoming film projects.
