HORology
Reasonably amusing. The female lead is great and very funny (“QUIET!!”) but the Jack Sparrow character has been written better in other episodes. Just my $0.02 of course.

A very mixed film for me
I gave this film 2 Stars but really I wish the system would allow me to give it 2 & 1/2 Stars because it’s a movie that has grown on me a little bit. It is by no means a “good movie”. I would still rather watch films 1, 2 & 3, and end the story there. This is a movie that messes with the lore and has tons of continuity issues, plus plot holes that make no sense. But with all that said, this movie is the reverse of On Stranger Tides, which is a film I originally enjoyed in 2011 but have come to dislike in the years since its release. It’s definitely the worst of the entire franchise. But Dead Men Tell No Tales is a film that I have come to appreciate for one major thing and that is in its ending, but we’ll get to that in a bit.Overall, Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Mean Tell No Tales is a representation of what happens when you continue a story and franchise that should have ended a long time ago (by a decade, in fact). Sure, the adventure is there and it’s still fun to hang out with (Captain) Jack Sparrow and (Captain) Hector Barbossa. But the rest of the cast and characters are just pale comparisons to previous characters who were just done better. Even already established just don’t feel the same. And I have to admit, not a whole lot of stuff happens that are memorable (except for the final few minutes of the film, but we’ll get to that in a bit). At least with On Stranger Tides, I can remember the ship that moves on its own and the killer mermaids sequence. In this… there isn’t anything much worthy of being remembered. Even the villain is bland and forgettable. But the one saving grace that pretty much saves this film from being terrible like On Stranger Tide is in its ending. But to explain why, I have to go into it details about it. Which means:SPOILERS:Apparently, despite the commentary with the writers on the At World’s End saying that Will Turner was able to be rid of Davy Jones’ curse in 10 years IF he did his duties as Captain of the Flying Duckmann and Elizabeth remained loyal to him for a full decade, this film retcons that (including the after-credits sequence of the 3rd film) and has Will unable to be with Elizabeth for 21 years. And this was done just to introduce Henry Turner, the son of Will and Elizabeth, and have him break the curse of his father. Now, on paper, this sounds like a good idea that I would be onboard for as a continuation of the story. THE PROBLEM is that it retcons an already established ending that the commentary of the 3rd film already gives. So, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth that puts the film at odds with me. I wouldn’t mind this if Elizabeth was involved (which she isn’t), including Will (which he isn’t), and if Henry was a well written character (which he isn’t).Yeah, I know I’m not making a good case here. In fact, it sounds like I hate this film more than On Stranger Tides, but that’s not the case. Despite the huge retcon that I dislike, the ending is where it’s ultimately saved because it does something that At World’s End doesn’t do: It shows us Will and Elizabeth getting back together. No commentary on the writers saying that it happens (off-screen). No leaving it to the imagination with a post-credits scene that ultimately doesn’t matter anymore. It literally shows us Elizabeth and Will reuniting in a very emotional moment that made me go “YES!!!” when it happened. It was so satisfying that I forgot about the film’s flaws straight into the end credits. It’s the long overdue happy ending we needed to see and this film, despite all of its problems, actually delivers on.And that’s why it’s ultimately a mixed bag for me. I can’t say that it’s good, but I can’t say that it’s bad either. If it wasn’t for that ending, this would be really bad in my eyes. And to be honest, for an ending to the franchise, it’s a good way to send the franchise out on. So, it gets extra points for that alone.Do I think the 3rd film is a better conclusion for a high note if you ignore the sequels after it and consider them non-canon? Definitely! But if you do continue, then I would say that the ending to this 5th installment makes it all worth it in the end. And it’s more than what I can say for other franchises.

Best Pirates!
This is the best one of the Series! I mean, Paul McCartney as a jailed pirate, how fun is that?! We’ve seen this several times and since we knew we loved it, we bought it.

I needed this for my collection!
My kids and I are POTX fans!!! We were trying to complete our collection during Covid Pandemic. These movies made the Pandemic bearable when we had to quarantine ourselves. Great value, awesome movie, and always a great watch when you want to binge watch POTC on a weekend.

Great movie, even for a sequel
I have rather enjoyed all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but some are better than others. As in most any movie franchise, the first is the best, but for a sequel, this was a great movie! I’d rank it 2nd or 3rd next to the original. There was even some fun semi-adukt humor that the kids didn’t get but was right up my husband’s alley, lol! It was a bit spooky as well but nothing my 7 and 9 year olds couldn’t handle.

Another fun and entertaining Pirates movie!
This is the 5th film in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise and it’s just as great and entertaining and fun as the previous 4. Rarely do sequels measure up, but these Pirates films are all top notch. Javier Bardem was creepy, dark and amazing as the bad guy ghost. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush were phenomenal as always.Watched this again after the Johnny Depp trial as it was interesting to watch it post trial incoming that Depp was suffering personally at that time in that horrible relationship with that abuser Amber Heard. Watching this film I never would’ve guessed or noticed he was suffering. He’s such a professional and gifted actor that he can turn that off to get to work.Disney needs to make one more pirates film, a 6th one, with all of the original cast members from Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom. And even bring back some of the other characters throughout the franchise to wrap up the franchise in one Big Bang where all end up together in the end. And they can bring back Geoffrey Rush even though his character Barbossa died….again. They keep bringing him back to life over and over anyway, they can do it once more.

A good, possible, end to the series
It is hard to tell if the Pirates franchise will ever truly be over until Johnny Depp decides he does not want to do any more of them. They make Disney a ton of money, so as long as he is willing to resurrect the character of Jack Sparrow, there is always a good chance another movie will come along at some point. This one, however, if it is the final movie in the series, does a good job telling its own story while having callbacks to and essentially finishing the Will and Elizabeth story (both Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly have cameos in the film). The main focus of the story is the search for Poseidon’s trident, which allows whoever wields it power over the seas. Javier Bardem is the new “big bad” of the franchise, Captain Espinoza, who has a history with Jack Sparrow. Geoffrey Rush also reprises his role as Barbosa, and many of the original supporting characters appear as well (e.g., Kevin McNally as Gibbs). The other new characters include the son of Will and Elizabeth, Henry Turner, (played by Brenton Thwaites) and Carina Smyth (played by Kaya Scodelario) who is an astronomer accused of being a witch, who is trying to find the trident to follow her father’s map left for her. The younger actor’s roles were clearly meant to mirror, but not outright copy, the roles of Bloom and Knightly in the first movie. For those who get the 4K blu-ray, the movie looks and sounds great, as you would expect. There are awesome visuals that are a mix of practical and CGI, and they really pop in the UHD format. The UHD disc has just the movie, and the regular Blu-ray disc has the extras. This includes over an hour of making-of and behind-the-scenes material, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and a couple of previews. A pretty good amount, especially with less and less bonus material being put out with the physical discs these days.Overall, I think the movie is good, even if it is derivative (at times) of parts of the other movies. Depp can easily step back into what has become an iconic character, without missing a beat. It would have been nice to incorporate Orlando Bloom into the movie more, as there was certainly a pretty easy way to do so, but from what I remember reading back when it was announced that the movie would be made, he was not really interested in more than a cameo role. While I do not think that the movie is as good as The Curse of The Black Pearl, I do think that it was on par with, or better than, the other sequels. I do think with a running time of just over two hours, it did not feel like the movie was dragging on too long. I definitely think it is worth checking out.
