If Horror-Comedy is a genre, then Renfield fits the label perfectly
I enjoyed this Dracula vampire story a lot more than I thought I would. It stars Nicholas Hoult and Nicholas Cage, and I certainly wouldn’t have paired those two together, the characters make the film work, and the goofy horrible actions that take place are enough to to keep the viewer awake till the end. The setting of much of the action in a CODA support group is kind of brilliant. Because the title character is stuck serving as Dracula’s “familiar” — basically a servant, and the thing that keeps him there is Dracula’s twisted take on every terrible thing being a result of Renfield’s actions. Cage does a decent enough job here — the actor known for his scenery chewing and over the top depictions of unbelievable characters in stressful situations, returns here for a lot of the same. Awkwafina is the film’s other star performer and she doesn’t really have much to do but act grouchy at her fellow police officers and the mob family that is at the center of this film; so her character is a bit flat. She and Hoult do take part in a number of action sequences, and the thing about the fight scenes is, they are mostly conventional filming of stunts. Obviously wired and the images digitally corrected, but the resulting effect is so much better than any Marcel film nowadays with the extensive CGI. And yet Dracula’s full set of transformational powers are also at play here: Turning to mist and bats. Those sequences are kept short and so the interaction between effects and actors seems believable, in a “this is ridiculous but totally entertaining” kind of way. This isn’t a kid- or family-friendly film by any measure; but if you want to let loose and delight in a ridiculous horror story, this should be on the list.

Good movie
Juano RT –
Fun take on the Dracula Story.
Amusing movie full of great special effects and humor. Nicholas Holts and Nicholas Cage are wonderful as Renfield and Dracula.

All the good titles are used
Alright, I saw the 4 star rating and thought: “well, that sucks” (partially a pun, and somewhat a real thought). I started watching it and really enjoyed it.When I saw Awkwafina was in it, I was worried. I haven’t been impressed with her acting in the past (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was almost ruined for me because of her acting). But I honestly enjoyed her performance in here. The fight scenes were comical and a bit overly bloody. It’s not because I’m squeemish. I thought the ripped off arms and shooting blood was fun, but the several times that there was FOUNTAINS of blood seemed just too much. It went from fun, campy, and over the top, to just plain too much. Maybe it was because even with standing int he middle of the fountain the main characters just had a couple of specks of blood on them? I don’t now.Regardless, I loved the story line, the dialogue, acting, and ending. I almost gave it 4 stars instead, but it’s the best vampire movie I’ve watched in years. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Weird, wild, and unexpectedly entertaining.
O.k…. this was strange. Renfield was one of those movies where I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into… but I ended up enjoying the ride. Nicolas Cage as Dracula? Weirdly perfect. It’s over-the-top, kind of insane, and definitely not your average horror-comedy, but that’s what made it work. It’s quirky, gory, and doesn’t take itself too seriously, which honestly made it a good time. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did, but I’m glad I added it to the collection.

Loved it!
Gory but good. The acting was great. A rather unusual take on the Dracula story. Facepalm funny.

A modern Dracula take crossed with workers’ talk therapy.
Sometimes, a movie comes along that has a fun concept and delivers on it. Renfield (2023) asks, “What if Dracula’s servant realizes his boss is toxic?” With all the modern progress that’s been made in worker’s rights, this ridiculous combination is just hilarious enough to work. There’s a lot of lore surrounding Dracula, so a story that’s set in the present time plays the contrasts for laughs. That this movie is even canonically connected to Dracula (1931) makes it feel like a heartfelt sequel to its almost 100-year-old predecessor. The two actors who make this movie work are none other than Nicholas Cage (Dracula) and Nicholas Hoult (Renfield). Cage basically (and almost literally) gnaws on the scenery as he’s allowed to ham it up as the iconic monster. Hoult has shown he has great acting talent in recent movies like The Favourite (2018) and The Menu (2022). Renfield shows he knows how to play a straight role in such a way that makes Renfield’s genuine nature a funny character arc of growing independence. There are other standard comedy actors here as well, including Ben Schwartz and Awkwafina, but they’re nothing to write home about. As an R-rated Dracula movie, Renfield leans heavily into the violence that comes with vampires and vampire-powered individuals. This gore might be over the top at times, but I think the campy nature of it leans into the comedy (like a 80s action flick). Even if the plot feels a little thin, it at least delivers on its premise of Dracula’s familiar realizing his employer is narcissistic and toxic to him as an individual. As long as you’re looking for a fun film to turn your mind off to, then this certainly fits the bill.A modern Dracula take crossed with workers’ talk therapy, I give Renfield 4.0 stars out of 5.

Very fun action horror comedy
Renfield (2023), an American action horror comedy based on characters from the original 1897 novel _Dracula_ by Bram Stoker, namely Dracula (played by Nicolas Cage) and the titular character, R. M. Renfield (played by Nicholas Hoult). Renfield in the book and the movie is Dracula’s servant and familiar, still human pretty much and able to go out in daylight and not needing blood to survive, is immortal, doesn’t age, and as long as he eats insects right before a fight, is incredibly powerful, fast, and almost invulnerable (he draws on the life force of the insects). Renfield spends close to a century tending to his master’s needs, finding him victims, cleaning up his messes, attending to his affairs with mortals and in sunlight, and helping him fight vampire hunters. After a close call with vampire hunters that very nearly resulted in Dracula’s destruction and leaving him extremely weak, the two go to New Orleans to recuperate. While in New Orleans, Renfield joins a 12-step style self help program to deal with codependence issues and tired of abuse from Dracula, takes steps to strike out on his own. Meanwhile, in an effort to find non-innocent victims for Dracula to consume, Renfield sets in motion a chain of events that sets up a huge conflict with the Lobo crime family and for Renfield to ally with officer Rebecca Quincy (played by Awkwafina), obsessed with taking down the Lobo family for killing her father but hampered by her lowly position and by police corruption. It’s a fun movie, over the top cartoonishly violent, with John Wick meets the Matrix type fight scenes done with a bit of comedic flair. Though there are horror elements a plenty, it is really more an action comedy. I liked the idea of exploring the humor of Renfield going to a self help group meeting in a church, Cage as Dracula was both scary but also outright hilarious (in a good way), the action scenes were fun, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Bellafrancesca Lobo, the mob boss, was delightful (loved her in The Expanse), and it is just a fun movie. Writing could have been a little stronger in some scenes, I would have loved to have more of Dracula than we got, I would have liked more time with the people of the self-help group as it looked like there was comedy potential there, and maybe a bit better use of the New Orleans setting, but it was quite enjoyable.
