So good you almost believe it’s real

As a native Californian living in the Bay Area, this movie certainly hit close to home. Both of my sons live in San Francisco (and some of the scenes were filmed on the same street one of my sons live on!), and I certainly worry about them being in the City the next time a high magnitude quake hits.I was ready for the classic cheesy disaster film and was very surprised that this film surpassed any expectations I might have had. The story line (yes, there really was a story line!) and writing was much better than I expected. Dwayne Johnson showed his chops as a dramatic actor. It was probably the first film I’ve seen him in where I really cared about his character. Alexandra Daddario as the daughter was excellent. The brief “romance” that developed between her character, Blake, and Ben (played by Hugo Johnstone-Burt), made you want to know what ultimately happened to them after the dust settled. The little brother, Ollie (played by Art Parkinson), stole your heart. This kid will be going places in future roles. The one character that you almost cheered for when a cargo liner fell on top of him (Daniel Riddick, played by Ioan Griffud), deserved every hiss and boo for leaving Blake to die in the back seat of a limo. All in all, the acting was pretty solid, the story line and writing was very good for a disaster film of this magnitude, and for all the artists that worked on the CGI for this film, kudos to all of you! I think the artists are the unsung heroes of this film. The destruction in both LA and San Francisco, and the tsunami in the Bay were done so well that you almost believed it could be real. Well done!If disaster films are a genre that appeal to you, this one was better than most. I would highly recommend it. Definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat and holding your breath.

I knew I’d get you to second base again.

You’ll understand my topic title when (if) you watch the movie.I would have loved to give San Andreas a higher rating but it’s filled with too many clichés. Every single natural disaster plot point that you’ve seen for decades now in other films, and which are now usually relegated to the SyFy channel because they’re no longer strong enough to capture the attention span of most movie watchers, is used in this action-packed film. The movie writers clearly thought the presence of a popular powerhouse in Dwayne Johnson would be enough to carry the storyline through, even if it means the storyline is as formulaic as can be. Then we have another problem- Dwayne Johnson movies tend to feel watered down, clichéd and overrated. I have no idea why this keeps happening. It’s like regardless what the storyline is about, it really feels like the same writers are working on *every* Dwayne Johnson movie giving them the same lackluster vibe.I also wonder how people in San Francisco feel about a movie like this. Powerful earthquakes of ridiculous proportions completely destroy the city, and they continue to destroy the city one section at a time. For a while I thought this movie would be completely awful because it had way too many problems and the exaggerated special effects weren’t helping matters, but it does slightly improve (based entirely on the amount of dangerous situations occurring for Dwayne, his ex-wife and their daughter as the movie goes along). We got more clichés on the way! Why does it seem like every natural disaster film has a teenage son or daughter who doesn’t get along with their mom or dad’s new boyfriend or girlfriend? Yet *again* this type of characterization occurs. This time Dwayne visits his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) who’s dating a selfish scumbag of a man (Ioan Gruffudd) who doesn’t seem so awful at first and instead seems impatient and/or dedicated to his business. That is, until he leaves Alexandra Daddario (the daughter) alone to fend for herself when the earthquakes starts causing too many problems for Paul to deal with. He runs away like a coward. He pretends to care about her before this, but you can tell by the way he’s acting it’s only a matter of time until his true colors show. Also speaking of predictable, notice how the kids always split up from their parents and THEN the natural disaster strikes, leaving two separate problems and clichéd hopelessness only for the kids and parents to finally reunite in the nick of time and help each other? Once again that occurs here. Then we have two British guys (a teenager and his younger brother- hilariously the older brother is either Hugo Johnstone Burt or Colton Haynes- they both look the same so I can’t tell you which one is really the older brother!) who are visiting San Francisco, and the older one happens to fall in love with Alexandra in the silliest way ever with no build-up whatsoever. All the while Paul Giamatti’s character is the scientist detecting unusual activity underground and warning people of a potential earth-changing earthquake that blows away all the 9.1 earthquakes of the past.Unfortunately the movie relies so much on special effects involving Dwayne Johnson finding himself in against all odds situations only to prevail miraculously that it’s hard to really enjoy this movie on a suspense level so it becomes an unintentional comedy. Of course, predictably, he falls in love with his wife again as she ditches that scumbag of a guy she was thinking about getting serious with. Well… the earthquake sort of gets rid of the guy for her, hehe. I really hope people in San Francisco don’t worry themselves sick over a movie like this because it does show all of San Frans distinct landmarks getting destroyed. The darn news doesn’t help either by reminding us that California is due for another major earthquake. But fear not- Dwayne can do anything! He can jump from an airplane and land perfectly on the Giants baseball field (AT&T park) with his ex-wife (and WOW is that a scary scene showing the ground beneath the stadium flapping like a blanket!) Dwayne can control a boat and move it out of the way of falling cargo and huge approaching ships during the highest of tides. He can rescue anyone who might be drowning (ahem). Dwayne can stop trucks from driving over a fault line in the nick of time, and he can control helicopters and allow for safe crashes. Even Chuck Norris must be impressed with these advanced skills. At this time, I’m surprised Dwayne wasn’t able to stop buildings from falling. I also wondered what was going on with all the people in the city while the story was focusing on the main characters trying to deal with the earthquakes. It was like they disappeared because there weren’t any screams or signs of life. Instead it got really silent which isn’t real of course, because people would be screaming and we’d see people running around scared.I actually think the two British kids were the best actors in the movie. Their presence was at least a step in a different direction for the action/natural disaster genre, which I appreciate. After all usually the teenage daughter falls in love with some clueless bozo. At least this guy made an effort to help Alexandra. Everybody else was bland, predictable and uninteresting. The same goes for the storyline, but the exaggerated special effects make this movie passable. At least San Andreas never stops the excitement. That darn earthquake however- it’s almost like it knows when a life or death situation is coming up and uses *that* exactly moment to cause more building-shaking chaos! Yeah passable and that’s it.

A movie of upcoming tragedy, devastation, & hope, that sadly–is NOT unrealistic!

Dwayne Johnson sure picked an excellent movie script to star in here! 😍 This is a movie of tragedy, devastation, & hope, that’s unfortunately NOT too far-fetched! 😢 We have all been warned thousands of years ago by pure Scriptural-Prophesy from multiple Holy Books, to “…Watch the Weather as well as the ‘Negative-Behaviors’ of People in general. So that we will know when the end of the world as we know it, is about to happen”!Nowadays, with all the sharp increases in natural-disasters that have been occurring worldwide and throughout this country over the last seven years in particular, we have clearly bared-witness to these written Prophecies coming to pass. And those of us with the Gifts of Discernment & Prediction combined with a Close Relationship with God-Yah-Allah, we clearly understand what’s going on today here and all over the world with the weather combined with people’s sharply increased-levels of indecent & hateful behavior in particular. With that being said, I watched San Andreas with a VERY open-mind and a sad heart, because I THOROUGHLY understand “what’s coming”–especially in the future of the U.S. And I’m not one who conveniently chooses to live in denial like an ostrich with its head in the sand….Trust me–with everything that’s already happening (endless fires; excessive rainstorms, lightning, tornados, hurricanes, & floods; record-breaking heatwaves; etc, etc), it’s NOT the least bit unrealistic that one day we can find ourselves encountering heavy tremors in the California San Andreas Fault Line that are horrible enough to be felt three-thousand (3,000) miles away in New York City–AND that triggers a few Tsunamis as a result! We have our predictions from our Forefathers & Ancestors as told to them by Our Holy Creator. And we need to take heed to this Knowledge that they left behind for us, to use as a Guide to prepare us for the approaching Fulfillment of even MORE Prophecies. Therefore, we all need to do a Self-Evaluation and make the proper changes in our behaviors and Life-Choices to improve our standards and our “Moral Compass” within ourselves and in how we treat each other in general.Believe me, we are NOT going to be able to continue being abusive & hateful towards one another for very long–especially over a person’s Melanin-Levels in their skin and/or their desire to live a life of high moral aptitude (which is what we’re SUPPOSED to be striving towards in the first place)! As long as we keep on ignoring these Commands to change our ways, punishments of increasing magnitude WILL continue to get worse, especially in the U.S.Dwayne Johnson and the rest of the Cast did a superb performance here. Sia sang the HELL outta California Dreamin’, giving it a hauntingly beautiful & heart-aching rendition that only SHE could create for this type of apocalyptic-movie; the Special Effects (FX) Team blazed the visuals & made every disaster scene bounce-off the screen at us; and above all–the Writers made that storyline as hard-core Reality as it comes–complete with the sweetness of Bad-Karma as well (what goes around, definitely comes around in here)!I’m very happy to have purchased San Andreas for my collection. After watching it, I would’ve been totally upset if I’d only done a Rental on this.

    San Andreas (Blu-ray)

All of my many Blue Ray reviews focus solely upon the actual quality of the film from Standard Def DVD quality to the higher standard set for Blu Ray. Summaries of the plot and opinions of the story line and acting can be found in the majority of the other reviews so I do not want to be redundant. My rating is based solely upon the Blue Ray disc’s quality and not the quality of the movie itself.Keep in mind, however, that the quality of what you see and hear is also dependent upon the quality of the TV monitor you are watching on as well as the home theater set up you are using. The monitor I use is a fairly new Panasonic ZT 65″ plasma and the amps, speakers, cables, BluRay player and Surround Processor I use are hi end esoteric gear to provide me with a more realistic and objective perspective. I am not trying to be a snob here, but just pointing out that what you see and hear is very dependent upon the quality of the gear you are using.VIDEO QUALITY…. It is difficult to find a blue ray disc with color and resolution better than this one. Color and clarity are superb with wonderful attention to even the small visual details. This applies not only to the CGI but to the actual scenes with actors..their skin tones, hair, pores and numerous visuals are beautifully color graded with no exaggeration in any of the colors. There is a great visual depth in the watching and while I am not a 3D fan, I bet the 3D would be spectacular. Black levels go pretty deep without sacrificing details at all. The Mbps rate generally stays in the mid 30s. Nothing is lost in the viewing and I saw no artifacts or issues in any part of the film. Stair stepping in some of the wide angle shots could easily have been an issue and, yet, there was none.Codec: MPEG-4 AVCResolution: 1080pAspect ratio: 2.40:1Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1AUDIO QUALITY… The audio is very impressive. The Blue Ray defaulted to a Dolby True HD 7.1. If my processor was Dolby Atmos capable, and I am only guessing here, it would have defaulted to that. I can’t wait to get my Atmos processor late this month. As it is, the 7.1 lossless audio creates a fully encompassing audio palate that completely immerses you in the action. And, there is a lot of action which pounds and demands the best your system can offer. Your LFE channel will have you rumbling in your seat. While I always have my subwoofer set lower so that I do not hear it as a separate speaker (this is the correct way to set a sub woofer, if you hear it as a directional separate speaker you have its volume set too high), the sub will be in use almost the entire film. What I especially liked about the audio for this Blue Ray is that there are so many dynamics to it. One minute the audio is furiously immersing you and the next, there is a quiet dialogue scene. It is the dynamics of the audio editing that really can pull you in. While I did say that the audio is fully immersive to the listener, I do not feel that discreet directionality is its main feature. All your speakers, whether it is a 5.1 or 7.1 system are in use but other than panning in-between sound stages I did not hear much discreet audio from any particular speaker. Maybe I will just have to give it a second listen. Never the less, the audio is demo worthy.EXTRAS…. I found the extras to be very interesting. To be upfront, at the beginning of the disc are two advertisements about how great saving these movies to the cloud are and how you can go about streaming your films. These are just ads that take away from the allotted space for the film you are buying causing the need for even greater compression of the movie you just paid for. For me, these ads and previews should be banned. Good extras were several deleted scenes, all in finished mode. I do not think that their inclusion would necessarily make for an extended version. A gag reel also had its funny moments. A real look at the San Andreas fault line was interesting. I did not watch the extra on how they scored the film though the scoring during the films was excellent. And finally, their was the typical director’s commentary which I did not listen to.All in all, while the film is mildly over the top, this Blu Ray is great to have in my collection.Hope this review helps andThanks for reading.
