Influences for poor box office in this mob movie
I looked forward to seeing this movie. However, unfortunately, the movie included use of dual roles for DeNiro.i believe the role of Don Vitone Genevese needed a more aggressive personality like Joe Pesci or Chazz Palmienteri to have fared better. A better mob movie needs much more experienced direction, and the box office as a result was disappointing for a mob movie headed by DeNiro who is very talented actor for any mob movie. The direction for Godfather parts 1 and 2 is the kind of direction this movie needed ‘in spades’.

Could Have Been Great, Two ( 2 ) much De Niro
A good film about the transfer of power from the first generation of mob bosses to generation 1A ( Lucky Luciano to his lieutenants Costello & Genovese ).Being written & produced by Scorcese’s crew: Pileggi,Winkler & director Barry Levinson, it was well done. The problem was De Niro & his ego, he was very convincing as Genovese, but much less so as Costello. In many of the scenes myself & others had to double & triple take to realize which character he was playing. He could have played either character very convincingly, but not both. Still a very good film and enjoyable, but with the people involved this could have been a much better film !
