A fun movie.
I watched this for the first time on HBO. That was around 1988. It is still a fun movie.I would have given it 5 stars, but the picture quality is only slightly better than the two-disc DVD set. Yes, the color is slightly more vibrant in some scenes. OTH, many of the scenes are softer and have a significant amount of film grain. My Sony tv’s do a great job upscaling the dvd and cleaning up the picture with Reality Creation set to Auto. In Standard picture mode, the is little to no difference in sound or picture quality. And yes, the 4K UHD version should be the one to watch. I will be honest, I have a few Kino Lorber 4K UHD videos and I feel they are average at best.If you have the two-disc DVD set, keep it. The 1080p BD really isn’t worth the upgrade IMHO. The improvement isn’t there. At least, not on my Sony OLED or Sony LED tv. Yes, it looks slightly better. It isn’t a big enough difference to warrant an additional $22.

The Perfect Monster Compilation in One Movie!
I heard about this movie years ago, but for some reason I never got around to watching it until 2010, this was very weird for me because I’m a huge horror & Halloween movie fan!The movie was quite entertaining & way different than I expected; I see why they call it a cult classic. They just don’t make movies like this anymore! The whole premise holds your attention. In my opinion, it reminds me of a mix between “The Goonies” meets “Hocus Pocus” with a tad more of profanity thrown in there. I don’t want to spoil anything for those of you who haven’t seen it, but, if I remember correctly, there are some swear words & something about a virgin – just for those of you thinking it may be a good one for a young kid, I’d have a viewing before showing them, but hey, that’s just my opinion. My friend & I watched this & had some great laughs. My only warning, the theme, “Rock Until You Drop” it will be stuck in your head for ages after watching this, so download it in advance!I decided to buy this movie before even watching it because it was cheap & all of the reviews I read were really good. The Special Edition DVD is good quality, I didn’t have any issues, the sound & picture were great. As for Special Features, I didn’t investigate much, I rarely watch special features, so sorry for those of you reading to find out about that…If you’re a horror or Halloween movie fan, I strongly recommend this. You can’t call yourself a true fan until you’ve seen all of the classics!

Cult Classic in Its Best-Ever Form
The Monster Squad has never looked or sounded better. This 4K UHD release is a dream come true for fans of ’80s horror-comedy. The Dolby Vision transfer from the original 35mm negative is stunning—colors pop, black levels are deep, and the grain is beautifully preserved. It’s the definitive way to experience this cult gem.The audio holds up too, with DTS-HD 5.1 and 2.0 lossless tracks that bring the monster mayhem to life. Bonus features are stacked: multiple commentaries, deleted scenes, a full documentary (Wolfman’s Got Nards), and even archival interviews. The packaging is slick, with reversible art and a slipcover that feels collector-grade.If you grew up quoting this movie or just discovered it, this release is a must-own. It’s the kind of upgrade that makes ghostbusting look like child’s play.

“Wolfman’s Got…..”
If you grew up in the 1980’s, you’re probably already familiar with “The Monster Squad.” It’s been a long time coming for this film to get the DVD treatment and I for one am glad to see it finally happen. For those not familiar with the story, here’s a brief explanation: Dracula’s been after an amulet that will allow the monsters of the world take over the human realm forever. Van Helsing tried to stop him many years ago but only managed to postpone his success. Now, in the present day 80’s, the amulet and the book necessary to trigger it have been found. Dracula gathers up all of his monster buddies (think Universal Monsters) to help him in his quest. Luckily for us humans, young Sean Crenshaw (Andre Gower) and his monster-crazy pals are on the case. Will the Monster Squad save the day?For a flick made in the 80’s, the special effects are pretty good. The monsters are especially good looking, but that’s expected of the wonder that is Stan Winston. The only semi-cheesey effect is that of the vortex at the beginning and end of the film. It looks rather dated, but special effects aren’t what this film is all about. It’s about youngsters facing challenging odds and trying to succeed. The human cast includes Gower, Ashley Bank (Phoebe), the reliable Stephen Macht (Del), Robby Kiger (Patrick), Brent Chalem (Horace), Michael Faustino (Eugene), Ryan Lambert (Rudy) and Leonardo Cimino as the Scary German Guy. The monsters include Duncan Regehr hamming it up as Dracula, Tom Noonan as the loveable Frankenstein, and “Napoleon Dynamite’s” Uncle Rico (Jon Gries) as the Desperate Man (the Wolfman’s human form).Although it’s considered a kids’ film, “The Monster Squad” shouldn’t be viewed by children under the age of nine or ten in my opinion. You’re free to use your own judgment, but just know that there is quite a bit of violence including impalings, dismemberment via dynamite, people sucked into a vortex, and vehicles exploding. There is also a healthy dose of strong language, especially during a scene that will probably upset young children involving Sean’s sister, Phoebe, and Dracula (it’s only one word, but it’s delivered with rage-filled perfection). This 20th Anniversary DVD is excellent. It brings back a lot of memories for anyone who remembers and loves this film. It includes a wonderful set of documentaries on the making of the film and the events that lead up to the DVD release. There are plenty of other features as well, but just know that Lionsgate did an outstanding job of packaging this DVD and gives the fans plenty of reasons to remember the good old days.In all honesty, the main reasons for watching this film are to get nostalgic for those of us who grew up on films like this, “The Goonies” and “Gremlins,” and also to introduce the film to a whole new generation. My daughter and my brand new son are still too young to see this in my opinion, but I’ll definitely introduce them to it later. This flick is a wonderful trip down memory lane and I’m sure that it will be the same for a new generation soon enough.

WOLFMAN’S GOT GNARDS!!!
This is a GREAT movie! Finally the studios have released it and given it the 2-disc treatment it deserves! The only place I was able to find it on DVD before was eBay, and after receiving it, was obviously a counterfeit. The movie has it all: the classic monsters; Dracula, Wolfman, the Mummy, Frankenstein (who turns out to be a teddy bear), the Lagoon Creature, and even Dracula’s 3 Brides; a race against time to stop the forces of evil; and “Fat Kid” even kicks Wolfman in the gnards! The story begins a century ago (from the 1980’s) where Abraham Van Helsing, a few good men, and a virgin fought the forces of evil and tried to banish them into Limbo using a magic amulet…they blew it! Fast forward a century later and you meet a group of kids who have started a club called, “The Monster Squad” where they discuss anything to do with monsters. Mainly comprised of the school outcasts, which some of us can relate to, the squad’s leader Sean soon discovers that all these monsters are for real! With the help of Van Helsing’s old diary, a “Scary German Guy” to help translate it, and their knowledge of all things monster, they fight the forces of evil! In the end, they find the magic amulet and are able to defeat Dracula and his band of bad guys! This movie is truly an 80’s cult classic! One thing I’ve read on other people’s reviews is a basic argument on whether this is a kids movie or not. My dad took me to go see this movie back in 1987 when it was in the theaters. I was only 8 years old at the time! It scared me a little, but it’s fun for kids to be scared! I had fun and after my dad walked me out of the theater, I asked if we could go see it again! It may be PG-13, but it’s still pretty mild compared to many other PG-13 movies. No sex or nudity, a small amount of language, and the violence isn’t that gory at all. So unless your the kind of parent that shields your kids from everything and wouldn’t let them see a movie where a bug gets stepped on, I’d definatley recommend this movie for your kids! (Ages 6 and up to be fair) Meeting adjourned!

A great film for the nostalgic 80s kid, and good fun for older kids.
It doesn’t quite know if it wants to be for kids or adults. It’s surprisingly gory and foul mouthed, has a drinking smoking tween [who never actually lights up], and is generally unfocused throughout. It’s full of plot holes big enough to drive a hearse with a silver skull hood ornament through. The cursing switches between kid safe words and actual foul language, and it mostly comes from the kid’s mouths. There is a fair amount of death and carnage. There are several sexual references and what today would be considered criminal behavior. The theme song that plays at the end is forgettable, and generally speaking the plot makes no sense and deliberately avoids simple and obvious solutions. And it’s completely awesome. It’s a fun horror romp from the 80s, complete with cheese and child acting. The creature effects hold up nicely, where as some of the others do not. The monsters look and sound cool, which is the most important thing. There are bits of homophobia and stereotypes, but mild in nature and from the perspective of foul mouthed 80s kids with no understanding of the world. It has several quotable lines, one of which will stick with a young one forever.Older kids will have a good time with this movie. However, the monsters are legitimately scary enough to be nightmare fuel for younger and more sensitive kids. This is a good movie for tweens and up to see that skirts the edge of what most parents will allow for that age. It’s a great Halloween flick that stands the test of time very well considering it’s budget and target. Not something you’ll likely watch a bunch of times, but definitely something most horror fan kids should see at the right age at least once. This is a gateway drug for horror movies, and it’s effective at entertaining both the target audience and adults for its run time. Just don’t go in expecting something on the level of a horror comedy like Ghostbusters and you’ll likely have a good time.

Great 4k Release of a classic “kids” movie.
One of my favorite movies as a kid and looks great in 4K. Man, the creature designs here by Stan Winston Studios are terrific. This is really a well put together movie all around, and it really stands up after all these years. Not at all what I’d call a kid’s movie, this is still wildly entertaining, seeing it again as an adult. It’s really cool these classic movies are getting new life in these updated formats.
