Lovely teen Julie Richman (Deborah Foreman) is steeped in the excessive, pink-clad culture of the San Fernando Valley, complete with her narcissistic boyfriend, Tommy (Michael Bowen). At a party, however, Julie falls for an edgy Hollywood punk named Randy (Nicolas Cage), and the two begin an unlikely romance. Torn between fitting in with her superficial friends and embracing a more non-conformist lifestyle, Julie ultimately has to decide to stay with Tommy or take a risk with Randy. She’s cool. He’s hot. She’s from the Valley. He’s not. Valley Girl Collector’s Edition Blu-ray

Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman star in the totally awesome comedy Valley Girl! When Julie (Foreman, April Fool’s Day, My Chauffeur) dumps her preppy boyfriend, the last thing she expects is to find love with the rockin’ Randy (Cage). The future’s open wide for Julie…but when her disapproving friends (E.G. Daily, Heidi Holicker, Michelle Meyrink) find Randy to be grody to the max, she is caught up in a culture clash between her Valley lifestyle and her Hollywood punk.

Featuring a so-bitchin’ soundtrack packed with New Wave hits, Valley Girl is a sweetly romantic slice of 80s nostalgia from director Martha Coolidge (Real Genius). Are you going to love it? We’re, like, so sure!

Remember this movie wasn’t that good the first time.

I will not lie. I came of age when there were people who lived on sides of town me and friends didn’t get. In this movie it’s Hollywood vs the Valley. These distinctions no longer exist. But in 1984 they did. Kinda a rich girl poor dude fall in love story. Nic Cage is the dude. And it is as corny as it sounds. But I still love it. Yes it’s not as good as when I saw it in the theaters. I was 14. There were schools I couldn’t get in, girls out of my league and Alpha males who seemed to live just to beat me and my boys down. But we believed it. Someday. And I still do. So for that reason alone I watched it. Man it’s lame. But the dream is still very real. High school doesn’t really change. And the kids from it are just the same as they were then only with money, careers and nicer cars. It’s still A Million Miles Away. My 40 year reunion is coming up. I’m hoping she’s divorced. Maybe I’ll have the nerve. Funny I’m the dude from Hollywood and she’s from….. If I say the place somebody’s gonna be embarrassed.

    Like, totally rad Blu-Ray!

A year after Frank and Moon Unit Zappa’s radio hit “Valley Girl” entered the 1980s public lexicon, Martha Coolidge’s comedy-drama modernization of “Romeo and Juliet” hit movie theatres as, well, y’know, “Valley Girl.”Our story; A quirky and impressive lead debut from Nicolas Cage as Randy, a typical California punk misfit who hangs with his buddy Fred (Cameron Dye) are a duo growing bored with the usual Cali nightlife haunts.Upon meeting the titular gal, San Fernando Valley girl Julie (Deborah Foreman), the two begin a relationship which quickly crumbles as peer pressure and the nasty meddling of a jealous, hot-headed ex-beau of Julie, nicely essayed by Michael Bowen rear their ugly heads.Peppered by a roster of FM radio New Wave classics such as Modern English’s “I Melt With You” (still popular to this day on television commercials) and The Plimsouls’ smartly used “A Million Miles Away,” the film is elevated by the uniformily fine performances and nicely scripted work by Wayne Crawford and Andrew Lane.A nice diversion from the decade’s plethora of sex comedies such as “Porky’s” and its many VHS-era spin-offs, this low-budget feature is an ambitious effort that stands proudly along similarly profound high school staged classics like “The Last American Virgin,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Heathers.”Serious character development is a key ingredient to “Valley Girl”’s success, veering from the ever fashionable cookie cutter stereotypes, and even reteams Frederic Forrest and Colleen Camp from “Apocalypse Now (Redux)” as Julie’s hippie parents, essentially her tale’s Greek Chorus. This “Shout! Select” release is loaded with totally cool and interesting supplemental materials. No need for the barely remembered 2020 remake.

One of the best movies ever made…

I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out when I was in college. I walked a mile to the theater (1 screen, no cineplex…) on a Thursday night without having any idea what was playing. I’d never even heard of this but as I’d made the trek, I bought a ticket. Immediately I fell in love with the movie and Deborah Foreman. (After seeing this movie I went out and picked up dozens of copies of our free college magazine with ads she did for Maybelline cosmetics and covered my dorm room wall with them.) I was so enchanted with it and her that I walked back the next night, but to my horror it turns out they change movies on Friday! Who knew? It was gone. I probably had to wait 10 years before I was able to see it again!!!And the soundtrack (Modern English, Plimsouls, Josie Cotton, etc.) is nothing short of spectacular – although a couple of songs wouldn’t make it through the woke gauntlet today. For some reason they didn’t release the soundtrack for, I don’t know, maybe 20 years. As a result, my first purchase of the soundtrack was a pirated tape from a head shop / record store in Little Five Points in Atlanta. I eventually got the CD and the DVD, but they were long in coming.Basically it’s Romeo & Juliet set in LA in the 80’s. It’s everything you would want and more, although my wife still thinks I’m nuts for liking it. I was saddened to read recently that Nicolas Cage, (It was his first starring role) when asked about his favorite works, didn’t include this gem among his top 5. Indeed, he didn’t even mention it. He had to have been probably suffering the effects of Ambien or something because there can be no other explanation for this not being at the very top of his list.

    Good movie.

Good movie. I guess you would call it a light hearted comedy/ drama. I like the punk rock jewelry the 2 male actors wear to the party. I like some of the music near the end of movie from the live band.

Like the 80’s movies are like totally the best!!

Wanna know what it was like? Watch this movie. The sound track takes you back in time and the wardrobe is right on point. Look at the locations, some that no longer exist. What a marvelous time existed when we all got along and dressed up instead of down. People cared about their appearance and regardless of race we all hung out together and danced to all genres of music. Music was creative and original to say the least. Not what you are forced to listen to these days on the radio. Great story and lots of nostalgia. See it, share it, and keep showing it to younger generations. Maybe they will learn something.
