For The Money, For The Glory | Smokey and the Bandit 1977
Smokey and the Bandit is a quintessential 1977 American action-comedy road film directed by stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham in his directorial debut. The film stars Burt Reynolds as the charismatic trucker Bo "Bandit" Darville, who, with his partner Cledus "Snowman" Snow (Jerry Reed), takes on a high-stakes bet to illegally transport 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana, Texas, to Atlanta, Georgia, in just 28 hours. Since Coors beer couldn't be sold east of the Mississippi River at the time, this mission is a form of bootlegging. As Snowman drives the truck with the cargo, Bandit acts as the "blocker" in his iconic black Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, running interference and drawing the attention of law enforcement using a CB radio. The plot thickens when Bandit, on his way back, picks up a runaway bride named Carrie (Sally Field), who is fleeing her wedding to Junior, the dim-witted son of an enraged and relentless Texas Sheriff, Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason). This sets off a high-speed chase across multiple states, as "Smokey" (a trucker term for a highway patrolman, hence the title) and his son pursue the Bandit. The movie is known for its incredible car stunts and crashes, charismatic performances from its lead actors, and a comedic, fast-paced plot. It became a cultural phenomenon, popularizing CB radio culture and the Pontiac Trans Am, and was a massive box office success, second only to Star Wars in 1977.
