The Mask: Jim Carrey & Cameron Diaz's Iconic First Scene | Full Preview
The 1994 film The Mask, directed by Chuck Russell and starring Jim Carrey in his breakout comedic role alongside Cameron Diaz in her film debut, is a fantasy-comedy based on the much darker Dark Horse comic book series. The plot centers on Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), a mild-mannered, hapless bank clerk in Edge City who is constantly mistreated and unlucky in love. His life is drastically changed when he discovers an ancient wooden mask, a relic of the Norse god of mischief, Loki, floating in the river. Upon wearing the mask, Stanley transforms into The Mask, a zoot-suited, green-faced, and manic trickster who can cartoonishly defy physics and exaggerate the wearer's repressed desires. With his newfound confidence and powers, The Mask goes on a chaotic crime-fighting spree—which includes a famous, elaborate dance number at the Coco Bongo nightclub—and he quickly becomes both a celebrated figure and a target for the police. Simultaneously, Stanley is infatuated with Tina Carlyle (Diaz), a dazzling lounge singer and the girlfriend of mobster Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), who is plotting to overthrow his boss. Tyrell eventually steals the mask, transforming into a violent, evil version of The Mask and escalating the chaos. The climax involves Stanley, with the help of his clever dog Milo, retrieving the mask to defeat the corrupted Dorian and save Tina. The film concludes with Stanley destroying the mask, having learned that true confidence must come from within, and earning Tina's affection, though a final gag suggests the mask's mischief may not be over. The movie was a massive commercial success and was praised for its blend of high-energy slapstick, groundbreaking CGI visual effects, and a stylized film noir aesthetic.Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz meet in the opening scenes of The Mask.
