Demon City 2025

Demon City, a 2025 Japanese action thriller directed and written by Seiji Tanaka, premiered on Netflix on February 27, 2025. Based on the manga "Oni Goroshi" by Masamichi Kawabe, the film follows the brutal quest for vengeance of Shûhei Sakata, a legendary ex-hitman portrayed by Tôma Ikuta. Sakata's plans for a peaceful retirement with his wife and daughter are shattered when the Kimen-gumi, a criminal syndicate disguised in demon masks, murders his family and frames him for the crime. Shot in the head and left for dead, Sakata miraculously survives but falls into a 12-year coma. Upon awakening, he embarks on a relentless and bloody mission to hunt down every member of the Kimen-gumi and make them pay for destroying his life. Adding a layer of complexity to his vengeful path, Sakata discovers that his daughter Ryo, whom he believed was dead, is still alive. The film features a prominent score by renowned guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei, enhancing the intense and violent atmosphere. The cast includes Masahiro Higashide, Miou Tanaka, Ami Tôma, Tarô Suruga, Mai Kiryû, Naoto Takenaka, Takuma Otoo, Masanobu Takashima, and Matsuya Onoe, who play various characters within Sakata's world and the menacing Kimen-gumi. Demon City is a visceral tale of retribution, blending action and thriller elements with a touch of the supernatural as Sakata confronts the "demons" who took everything from him.

I really wanted to like this. First 15-20 minutes made me feel like it could be inspired by a mix of John Wick and The Crow (original). They raised the stakes by what happened to the protagonist but we never really get the payoff from the build up. He is inexplicably invincible, even when he wants you to believe he's hurt and sadly the villains never really die. Speaking of which, they are evil to the core but then they have little back stories to make it seem like they have some sort of honour. There are some cool action sequences, and performance around the Samurai culture but overall I found this movie weird and ultimately disappointing. I had to watch John Wick after to scratch the vengeance itch it gave me.
