Good Boy 2025

Directed by Ben Leonberg in his feature debut, Good Boy (2025) is a uniquely crafted supernatural horror thriller told entirely from the perspective of a dog. The story follows Indy, a loyal Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, who moves with his owner, Todd (a young man suffering from chronic lung disease), to a secluded rural home that once belonged to Todd’s late grandfather. As they settle in, Indy begins to sense a malevolent, shadowy presence that remains invisible to Todd. The atmosphere grows increasingly grim as Todd’s health deteriorates and he becomes uncharacteristically aggressive, while Indy experiences terrifying visions and discovers the remains of the house's previous pet, Bandit. The film culminates in a tragic finale where Indy desperately tries to protect Todd from a skeletal dark entity that eventually drags him into a dark cellar tunnel, symbolizing a supernatural extension of the terminal illness and generational trauma haunting the property. The cast is led by the director's real-life dog, Indy, who plays himself and earned critical acclaim (including the "Howl of Fame" award at SXSW) for his expressive, dialogue-free performance. Human cast members include Shane Jensen as Todd, Arielle Friedman as his concerned sister Vera, and horror veteran Larry Fessenden as Todd’s late grandfather. The film also features Stuart Rudin as the neighbor Richard and Max the dog as the ghostly Bandit. Because the film is shot from a dog's eye level, the human actors are often framed from the waist down or in silhouette to emphasize Indy’s point of view and his limited understanding of the human world. Financially, Good Boy became a massive "sleeper hit" and a standout example of low-budget success.
