Here 2024
Here (2024) is a drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis, known for Forrest Gump and Cast Away. It stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, reuniting them after their iconic roles in Forrest Gump. The film is based on Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel and explores the lives of various families inhabiting the same New England home over centuries. The narrative unfolds non-linearly, employing a fixed-camera technique and digital de-aging technology to depict characters across different time periods.🧬 Plot Summary The story spans from prehistoric times to the 21st century, focusing on a single plot of land and its inhabitants. It begins with dinosaurs roaming the area, progresses through the Ice Age, and follows the Lenni-Lenape people. The central house is built in the early 20th century, and the narrative delves into the lives of its various occupants, including the Young family in the mid-1900s. In 2024, an elderly Richard Young (Tom Hanks) brings his wife Margaret (Robin Wright), who now has dementia, back to the house to rekindle her memories of their shared past. The film concludes with a poignant moment, symbolized by the appearance of a hummingbird.🏆 Critics Here received a mixed to negative reception. Critics noted the film's ambitious storytelling but criticized its over-reliance on visual effects and the fixed-camera approach, which some felt detracted from the emotional depth. The film holds a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 177 reviews, with an audience score of 59%.🌐 Where to Watch Here premiered at the AFI Fest on October 25, 2024, and was released in U.S. theaters on November 1, 2024. It grossed $15.8 million worldwide. The film is available for digital purchase or rental on platforms like Amazon Prime Video. It is expected to be available for streaming on Netflix starting January 30, 2025.🎥 Conclusion Here is a visually distinctive film that attempts to weave a tapestry of human experiences across time. While its innovative techniques may appeal to some viewers, others might find the execution lacking in emotional resonance. If you're interested in experimental storytelling and the reunion of Hanks and Wright, Here offers a unique cinematic experience.

Here is not a film for everyone. It tries something different, with a single focused camera angle and a story that takes place over hundreds (or millions) of years. But that is also part of the issue that keeps it from excelling. We get little time with every story point, with most scenes taking 1-5 minutes before jumping to the next scene. It also takes a bit to get going before we get to the meat of the story. If it had been a bit more focused on our main group of characters, the ending would have had a much bigger impact. There was also a bit too much CGI that looked rough and a focus on getting characters right up to the camera for scenes all felt a bit too forced. It's also a bit over the top of how much stuff happens in a single space. In the end, 'Here' is an ambitious film that ultimately fails to deliver a fully satisfying story as it's too concerned with its notion of showing you everything that has happened in this one spot and making the camera angle the main focal point of the story.
