Directed by Johannes Roberts, known for his work on 47 Meters Down and The Strangers: Prey at Night, Primate is a 2026 American natural horror film that premiered at Fantastic Fest in late 2025 and is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on January 9, 2026. The story centers on a college student named Lucy, played by Johnny Sequoyah, who returns to her family’s secluded and high-tech cliffside home in Hawaii for the summer. After her father, an author played by Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur, leaves for a business trip, Lucy and her friends decide to throw a pool party. However, the atmosphere turns deadly when the family’s beloved pet chimpanzee, Ben, contracts rabies from a wild animal bite and transforms into a hyper-violent predator. Portrayed through a blend of practical effects and a physical performance by Miguel Torres Umba, the rabid chimp traps the group in and around the home's infinity pool, forcing them to use their limited resources and the father’s unique methods of communicating via American Sign Language to survive the night.
