Tatami 2024

"Tatami" (2024) is a gripping sports drama and political thriller, notably co-directed by Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv and Iranian-French actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi, who also stars in the film. The movie centers on Leila Hosseini (Arienne Mandi), a talented Iranian female judoka competing in the World Judo Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, with aspirations of winning Iran's first gold medal. Her coach and former idol, Maryam (Zar Amir Ebrahimi), is by her side. However, midway through the competition, the Iranian government issues an ultimatum: Leila must fake an injury and withdraw from the tournament to avoid a potential match against an Israeli athlete. What unfolds is a tense psychological and political battle as Leila is faced with an impossible choice. Defying the regime would jeopardize her own freedom and the safety of her family back in Tehran, while complying would shatter her lifelong dream. As the pressure mounts, with threats to her husband and father, Leila's determination is tested. The film is shot in stark black and white, amplifying the intensity and claustrophobia of the events. "Tatami" is praised for its powerful performances, particularly by Mandi and Amir Ebrahimi, and its ability to blend the excitement of a sports drama with the harrowing realities of political oppression and human rights. It's a compelling narrative inspired by true events, highlighting the courage of individuals who defy authoritarian systems for their beliefs and dreams.
