Unknown Number: The High School Catfish 2025
Directed by Skye Borgman, the 2025 Netflix documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish recounts a bizarre and disturbing true-crime case from a small town in Michigan. The film details the nearly two-year-long cyberbullying campaign endured by a teenage girl, Lauryn Licari, and her then-boyfriend, Owen McKenny. Beginning in 2020, the couple received a deluge of aggressive and sexually explicit text messages from an unknown number, which included threats, insults, and even messages encouraging Lauryn to take her own life. The relentless harassment caused significant distress, led to their breakup, and initially pointed suspicion toward their classmates, particularly a girl named Khloe Wilson. The documentary features interviews with the victims, their families, and law enforcement, including police body cam footage of the arrest. It culminates in the shocking revelation that the culprit was none other than Lauryn's own mother, Kendra Licari. Kendra was eventually charged with stalking a minor and other crimes, pleading guilty and being sentenced to 19 months to five years in prison. The documentary delves into the psychological and legal aspects of the case, exploring some of the possible motivations behind Kendra's actions, though a full explanation remains exclusive.
