Minions 2015
The 2015 animated film Minions, a prequel and spin-off to the Despicable Me franchise, begins with a historical montage narrated by Geoffrey Rush, explaining that Minions are single-celled organisms that have existed since the dawn of time with the sole purpose of serving the most "despicable" masters. After accidentally causing the demise of various bosses—including a T-Rex, a caveman, an Egyptian Pharaoh, and Napoleon—the Minions retreat into a snowy cave in Antarctica. By 1968, they have fallen into a deep depression without a master, prompting a courageous Minion named Kevin to set out and find a new villain to serve. Joined by the rebellious Stuart and the eager young Bob, the trio hitches a ride to New York City and eventually discovers Villain-Con in Orlando, Florida. There, they compete in a challenge and are hired by Scarlet Overkill, the world's first female supervillain, who takes them to her home in London. Scarlet’s ultimate ambition is to steal the St. Edward’s Crown from Queen Elizabeth II so she can become the Queen of England. Her husband, the eccentric inventor Herb Overkill, outfits the trio with high-tech gadgets for the heist. During the chaotic pursuit at Buckingham Palace, Bob accidentally pulls the legendary Excalibur from its stone, causing him to be instantly crowned as the new King of the United Kingdom. Furious at being "usurped," Scarlet attempts to kill the Minions, but Bob eventually abdicates the throne in her favor. Despite his loyalty, Scarlet betrays them and locks the trio in a torture chamber. After escaping, the Minions inadvertently disrupt Scarlet's coronation, leading to a massive chase through London. The conflict peaks when Kevin is accidentally enlarged to giant proportions by Herb's "Ultimate Weapon" machine, allowing him to save his friends and defeat the Overkills. In the final moments, a young Gru appears, freezes the Overkills with a freeze ray, and steals the crown himself. Recognizing him as the ultimate boss they’ve been searching for, the entire Minion tribe decides to follow him, setting the stage for the original Despicable Me. The film features a star-studded voice cast led by Sandra Bullock as Scarlet Overkill and Jon Hamm as Herb Overkill. The primary trio of Minions—Kevin, Stuart, and Bob—is voiced by the film's co-director Pierre Coffin. Supporting roles include Michael Keaton and Allison Janney as the bank-robbing Nelson family, Jennifer Saunders as Queen Elizabeth II, Steve Coogan as both the Tower Guard and Professor Flux, and Steve Carell reprising his role as a young Gru. Financially, Minions was a massive success for Illumination and Universal Pictures, grossing approximately $1.159 billion at the worldwide box office. It became the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time upon its release and remains one of the few animated features to surpass the billion-dollar milestone, cementimg the Minions as global cultural icons. As of late 2025, Minions is widely available for streaming across various international platforms. In the United States, it is currently hosted on Netflix and Peacock, following Universal's standard distribution deals. Internationally, the film's availability varies by region: in Australia, it can be streamed on Paramount+, Netflix, and Stan, while in other territories, it frequently appears on Disney+ or local services like Binge. For viewers globally, the movie is universally available for digital rental or purchase through major storefronts including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Fandango at Home.
