V/H/S/HALLOWEEN 2025

V/H/S/HALLOWEEN is an American found footage horror anthology film and the eighth installment in the popular V/H/S franchise. The film premiered on September 19, 2025, at Fantastic Fest and was released exclusively on Shudder on October 3, 2025, with a running time of approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes. Directed by a team including Bryan M. Ferguson, Casper Kelly, Micheline Pitt-Norman, R.H. Norman, Alex Ross Perry, Paco Plaza, and Anna Zlokovic, the film presents a collection of six interlinked, Halloween-themed horror segments, all told through the lens of found footage. The wraparound story, "Diet Phantasma," serves as the frame narrative, revolving around a corporate focus group testing a new soda laced with poltergeist extract, leading to gory and possessed chaos. The individual segments include: "Coochie Coochie Coo," where two older teens trick-or-treating encounter the terrifying urban legend figure known as "The Mommy"; "Ut Supra Sic Infra," a Spanish-language short about a lone massacre survivor being led back to the scene of the crime where his friends had their eyes removed; "Fun Size," a horror-comedy where friends who take too much candy from a bowl are transported to a surreal, deadly candy factory; "Kidprint," a grim tale about a video store owner who creates "Kidprints" for missing children and is tied to a series of disappearances; and the finale, "Home Haunt," about a father's elaborate backyard haunted house that unleashes genuine supernatural Hell when he plays a cursed record. The anthology is noted for its blend of extreme gore, dark humor, and diverse horror concepts all centered around Halloween traditions.

If you're already a fan of the V/H/S franchise, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in V/H/S: Halloween. For me, it landed somewhere in the middle. One segment stood out as genuinely scary, original, immersive, and the kind of horror that lingers. Unfortunately, the rest leaned too heavily into gore for gore's sake, sacrificing storytelling for shock value. That said, there's still plenty of chaotic fun to be had. The film balances flashes of strong direction with moments of pure absurdity, and even when it misses, it never stops being wild. The uneven quality of the segments makes it tricky to rate, but with only one standout and the rest feeling just okay.
