Yadang: The Snitch 2025
"Yadang: The Snitch" (2025) is a South Korean action-thriller directed by Hwang Byeong-gug and written by Kim Hyo-seok. The film delves into the morally ambiguous world of "yadang," or informants in drug crime circles, who sell information to criminals for reduced sentences or to law enforcement for arrests, forming a complex triangle with police and prosecutors. The story centers on Lee Kang-soo (Kang Ha-neul), a young man who, after being falsely accused and imprisoned for drug use, is offered a deal by ambitious prosecutor Koo Gwan-hee (Yoo Hae-jin) to become a "yadang" in exchange for a lighter sentence. Their partnership proves fruitful, allowing Gwan-hee to climb the ranks with major busts, thanks to Kang-soo's intel. However, narcotics detective Oh Sang-jae (Park Hae-joon), a by-the-book cop, consistently hits dead ends due to Kang-soo's double-dealings and begins to investigate the suspicious connection between Kang-soo and Gwan-hee. The film explores themes of prosecutorial corruption, police ineptitude, and the disproportionate punishment for drug offenses, as Kang-soo finds himself caught between pleasing law enforcement and helping arrested criminals, leading to betrayals, personal hardships, and a gritty fight for justice against a corrupt power structure. The film also features Ryu Kyung-soo as Cho Hoon and Chae Won-bin as Uhm Su-jin, an aspiring actress whose career is ruined by drug exposure. "Yadang: The Snitch" was released in South Korea on April 16, 2025, and in limited release in the US and other territories shortly after.
