Brian Denis Cox CBE is a highly respected Scottish actor known for his commanding presence and versatile work across stage, film, and television, with a career spanning over six decades. Born on June 1, 1946, in Dundee, Scotland, he is a classically trained Shakespearean actor, having been a founding member of the Royal Lyceum Theatre and starring in numerous productions with the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he gained particular recognition for his portrayal of King Lear. On screen, Cox is famous for inhabiting complex and often villainous or tyrannical characters. His extensive filmography includes being the first actor to portray Hannibal Lecter on film in Manhunter (1986), as well as memorable roles in Braveheart (1995), Rushmore (1998), Adaptation (2002), the Bourne series (as Ward Abbott), X2: X-Men United (2003) as William Stryker, Troy (2004) as King Agamemnon, and the horror film The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016), where he played the lead coroner Tommy Tilden. He achieved a new level of global fame and critical acclaim for his starring role as the powerful, foul-mouthed media patriarch Logan Roy in the HBO drama series Succession (2018–2023), a performance for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Among his numerous accolades are two Laurence Olivier Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award (for his portrayal of Hermann Göring in Nuremberg), and the aforementioned Golden Globe.
