The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim 2024
The animated feature film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is a prequel set about 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama and produced by a team including veteran LOTR filmmaker Philippa Boyens, it tells the tale of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan, whose name later inspired the fortress of Helm's Deep. The story is narrated by Éowyn, voiced by Miranda Otto reprising her role. The central conflict is ignited when Helm (voiced by Brian Cox) refuses the aggressive marriage proposal of Dunlending Lord Freca (Shaun Dooley) for his daughter, Héra (Gaia Wise), to marry Freca's son, Wulf (Luke Pasqualino). In a fistfight, King Helm unintentionally kills Freca with a single blow, earning him the nickname "Hammerhand." The vengeful Wulf, now the Dunlending lord, launches a brutal attack on Rohan to usurp the throne, forcing Helm and his people to make a desperate last stand in the mountain stronghold of the Hornburg. The narrative focuses heavily on Héra, Helm's defiant and independent daughter—a character only alluded to in Tolkien's appendices—as she rises to lead the resistance against Wulf's deadly siege, confronting both external enemies and the hubris of her father. The film was released in cinemas on December 13, 2024.
