The son of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and Barbara Boothe, he briefly attended USC’s film school before dropping out in 2005 to focus on his first film, Flyboys . Under his leadership, Skydance has become a powerhouse in Hollywood, co‑producing critical and commercial successes such as True Grit, the Mission: Impossible franchise (Ghost Protocol, Fallout, Rogue Nation), Top Gun: Maverick, World War Z, and Star Trek blockbusters. He also launched Skydance Television (with hits like Grace and Frankie, Altered Carbon, Jack Ryan), Skydance Interactive, and Skydance Animation . An accomplished pilot with multiple certifications, David famously performed with the "Stars of Tomorrow" aerobatics team at Oshkosh in 2003.
