The Old Guard 2 (2025)
Released on July 2, 2025, The Old Guard 2 follows the immortal mercenaries as they face a double threat from the past and a new, ancient enemy. After losing her restorative powers, Andy struggles with her mortality while her former companion Quỳnh returns with a deep-seated vendetta after five centuries of drowning at the bottom of the sea. The group is further challenged by the arrival of Discord, played by Uma Thurman, a legendary immortal and elusive arms dealer who seeks to control the team's unique abilities. The story takes the immortals from the streets of Rome to a high-stakes confrontation at a nuclear facility in Indonesia. During the climax, it is revealed that Nile, as the "last immortal," possesses the power to strip others of their gifts or transfer them, a discovery that leads to a major turning point when Booker redeems his past betrayals by sacrificing his own immortality to restore Andy’s strength. The film concludes on a heavy cliffhanger as Discord escapes with several captured team members, forcing Andy and a reformed Quỳnh to join forces for a future rescue mission. Directed by Victoria Mahoney, the film features the return of the original ensemble cast, including Charlize Theron as Andy, KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Veronica Ngô as Quỳnh, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley. New additions to the franchise include Henry Golding as the sage-immortal Tuah and Uma Thurman as the antagonist Discord. While the film was a massive hit for Netflix, securing the number one spot globally in its debut week with over 37.5 million views and 66.8 million hours viewed, it received a mixed reception from critics. Holding a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel was praised for Theron’s lead performance and the intense fight choreography but criticized for its dense lore and lack of a definitive resolution. As a streaming exclusive, its record-breaking digital performance solidified it as one of the platform's top action titles of the year.

What was that? Where did the second half of the film go? My five points are lenient, as I like the first movie, the story, and the actors. I was really excited about this film and also curious to see what would become of Quynh after lying at the bottom of the sea for 500 years and dying about 4 million times. That must do something to you. But no! After 45 minutes, I was wondering when the film would finally start. It was so slow, and ultimately the story is just boring. Just as disappointing as Highlander 2 ;-). And shortly before the end, I realized that this film has no ending, and Netflix had simply ripped me off.
