Thomas Kretschmann is a German actor born on September 8, 1962, in Dessau, East Germany. Before pursuing an acting career, he was a competitive swimmer. He is known for his versatility and for often portraying military officers, especially in films about the Third Reich. Kretschmann's career highlights include his roles as Lieutenant Hans von Witzland in Stalingrad (1993), Hauptmann Wilm Hosenfeld in the critically acclaimed film The Pianist (2002), and Hermann Fegelein in Downfall (2004). He also played Captain Englehorn in the 2005 remake of King Kong and is widely recognized for his portrayal of Baron Wolfgang von Strucker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
