Infinity Pool 2023
Infinity Pool is a 2023 science fiction body horror film written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, the son of famed director David Cronenberg. The film stars Alexander SkarsgÄrd as James Foster, a struggling novelist, and Cleopatra Coleman as his wealthy wife, Em, who are vacationing at an isolated luxury resort in the fictional seaside country of Li Tolqa. Their chronic marital strife is exacerbated when they are befriended by the seductive and mysterious Gabi (Mia Goth) and her husband, Alban. Guided by the new couple, James and Em venture outside the resort grounds, which is forbidden to tourists, and become involved in a tragic accident when James accidentally runs over and kills a local man while driving drunk. James is arrested and learns that the country has a unique, zero-tolerance justice system for foreign nationals: the penalty for his crime is execution, often carried out by the victim's eldest son. However, for a hefty fee, the guilty can have a perfect clone of themselves created and executed in their place. James, relying on Em's wealth, pays to watch his own double be killed. This experience, which horrifies Em, titillates James, leading him to hide his passport to extend his stay. He is then drawn into a small group of wealthy, hedonistic Western tourists who regularly commit crimes and pay to watch their clones be executed, treating the country as a playground where they can indulge in reckless violence and perversions without consequence. The film explores themes of privilege, identity, and the destruction of the soul when all inhibitions are removed. Infinity Pool premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and received generally positive reviews, with particular praise for the atmosphere and Mia Goth's performance.

I saw "Infinity Pool" last night in the theatre. It is a very strange movie directed by Brandon Cronenberg, the son of David Cronenberg ("Videodrome", "The Fly", etc.) It is about a couple (Alexander SkarsgÄrd and Cleopatra Coleman) who travel to a luxury resort in a repressive dictatorship. They meet another couple (Jalil Lespert and Mia Goth) who convince them to travel off the grounds of the resort, even though it is prohibited by the rules of the resort and country. Soon a tragedy occurs, and the couple is thrust into a fever dream of drugs, sex and violence. Mia Goth is excellent as the temptress who pushes SkarsgÄrd's character into doing things he would never think of doing. SkarsgÄrd is wasted in this role and his character takes actions that defy common sense. And while some have praised Brandon Cronenberg's direction - I found some of the strange angles and quirks he uses to be more annoying than ingenious. There is a surfeit of sex, violence and gore for those who enjoy that, but I cannot say that it really added anything to a convoluted plot that really makes no sense. Only recommended for Mia Goth's standout performance.
