Back in Action 2025

The 2025 action-comedy film Back in Action, directed by Seth Gordon, follows former elite CIA operatives Emily and Matt, played by Cameron Diaz (marking her return to acting) and Jamie Foxx, who gave up their high-stakes careers 15 years ago to raise a family in suburban Atlanta. Their quiet, domestic life with their two children, Alice (McKenna Roberts) and Leo (Rylan Jackson), is violently disrupted when their secret cover is accidentally blown, forcing them back into the world of international espionage. The plot quickly escalates as they are targeted by mercenaries seeking a stolen "master key" (the Industrial Control Systems or ICS device) that can control global electronic systems. Their pursuit leads them to London, where they are forced to reveal the truth to their shocked children and seek help from Emily's estranged mother, Ginny (played by Glenn Close), a resourceful former MI6 agent. They discover that their former superior, Chuck (Kyle Chandler), is a double agent working with the terrorist Balthazzar Gor to sell the ICS Key, taking the children hostage in the process. The final act involves a high-octane chase and confrontation across London landmarks, including the Thames, where they save their children and recover the key, though a final twist by MI6 agent Baron (Andrew Scott) suggests their adventure—and the mystery of Emily's father—is far from over, potentially setting up a sequel. The film's major cast also includes Jamie Demetriou as Nigel. The film premiered on Netflix on January 17, 2025, it was a major success for the streamer, reportedly becoming Netflix's most-viewed original movie of the year based on viewing minutes. Despite its popularity with audiences (holding a much higher audience score), critical reception was largely negative, with many critics calling it predictable, formulaic, and largely forgettable. The film's strength was often cited as the returning on-screen chemistry between Diaz and Foxx, but critics generally felt the plot was cliché-ridden and the action sequences, while brisk, lacked originality.
